SPOKANE, Wash. – At the end of two periods on Friday night, the Spokane Women’s Hockey Red and White teams were once again locked up in a tight battle with the score knotted at three goals apiece. In the final 25 minutes, though, SWH White surged and wrapped up the opening six-week stretch with their fourth win.
SWH White (4-1-1) got multi-point efforts from Lexi and Breeyn, and Shari kept things clean in the third as White beat SWH Red (1-4-1) 6-3.
Emily got things going in the first period as Red opened the scoring for only the second time this season. Abby S got the assist on the goal just 2:32 into the evening, and SWH Red held the early 1-0 lead.
Mel V netted her fourth of the season to knot the score at 1-1 and briefly tie Addie for the league lead in goals scored with 6:40 to play in the first frame, but less than two minutes later, Addie gave SWH White the 2-1 lead with her fifth of the season. Ally held the puck in at the blue line and got it down the right wing boards to Lexi who sent a feed to Addie in the slot on the play, and after one, SWH White led 2-1.
Laura tallied her fourth goal of the season and tied the score at 2-2 early in the second, and the goal set off a stretch of three goals in the next six minutes. Laura’s tally came just 1:50 into the frame, Breeyn answered for SWH White to reclaim the lead at the 5:19 mark, and Rena tied things again at 8:12. For Breeyn and Rena, the goals were their first of the season.
As the period wound down, the teams traded chances, but Zak and Shari stood tall in goal, and when the horn sounded to end the second period, the score remained knotted, 3-3.
In the third, though, SWH White controlled play throughout, and it took only 34 seconds for them to take the lead for good. Mellissa took a shot from the left point that was turned aside, but Lexi backhanded home the rebound, and SWH White had the lead back at 4-3. Two more SWH players got their first goals of the season for White in the final moments of the game, as both Taylor and Meagan scored to push the lead to the final margin of 6-3.
Shari (2-0) made 22 saves and yielded four goals to earn the victory in goal, while Zak (2-3-1) allowed five tallies and made 26 saves and they were saddled with the loss.
